What a port does. A port is a special place where ships come to pick up and drop off cargo, passengers, and supplies. The ships tie up at structures called wharves or loading docks so people and goods can move on and off safely.

Ports aren't always on the ocean. Most ports are right on the coast, but some are far inland, like Hamburg in Germany, Manchester in England, and Duluth in Minnesota. These inland ports connect to the sea through rivers or canals, making them just as busy and important as coastal ones.

Gateways for people. Throughout history, ports have been entry points where immigrants arrived to start new lives and where soldiers landed during wartime. This made port cities into fascinating mixtures of different cultures and peoples from all around the world.

Trading hubs. Ports are like the beating heart of world trade, where goods from one country get shipped to another. Without ports, the stuff we buy from far away would never be able to reach our stores and homes.

Complex and busy places. A port needs wharves, cranes, warehouses, and channels deep enough for big ships to sail through. Thousands of people work together every single day to keep everything running smoothly.
