Three special layers. A quilt is made from three layers stitched together: a pretty top layer with a design, a fluffy middle layer called batting that traps warmth, and a backing layer on the bottom.

Many stitching styles. Quilters use different stitch patterns to hold the layers together, and they can sew by hand with a needle or use a machine to make the stitching faster.

Creates puffy texture. When you stitch through all three layers, the thread creates tiny quilted patterns that make the fabric puffed up and three-dimensional, which also helps trap warm air inside.

Endless design possibilities. The top layer can have any pattern or colors you want, from traditional patchwork squares to modern designs, making each quilt unique and personal.

Tools for every quilter. You can quilt by hand if you want to go slowly and carefully, or use a sewing machine for speed, or even use a special longarm machine that quilters use in studios.
