Cool Facts
Invisible Radio Waves. Radio waves are a type of energy that travels through the air at the speed of light, even through walls and buildings. They are so tiny and fast that you cannot see them, but antennas catch them and turn them back into sounds and pictures.
Transmitter and Antenna. A radio station uses a transmitter (an electronic device) connected to an antenna to send radio waves out in all directions. The antenna acts like a megaphone that shoots the waves far and wide so millions of people can receive them.
Receiver Catches Waves. Your radio at home has an antenna too that catches the radio waves flying through the air. The receiver then turns those invisible waves back into sound so you can hear music, news, or talk shows.
Many Uses Beyond Music. Radio waves do more than just bring you your favorite station. They power radar that helps airplanes navigate safely, help ships find their way at sea, and even let people control toys and drones from far away.
