Scripts are blueprints. A screenplay is like a detailed instruction manual that tells actors what to say, directors where to point the camera, and everyone on set what happens next. Without a great script, even the coolest movie ideas fall flat.

Special formatting rules. Screenplays have their own unique format with specific fonts, margins, and ways of writing dialogue and directions. Producers and directors can quickly read a script because everyone in the industry uses the same formatting style.

Action and dialogue. Screenwriters describe what we see on screen (the action) and everything the characters say (the dialogue). They also write brief descriptions of what characters are thinking or feeling, but they can't show internal thoughts directly on film.

Freelance career. Most screenwriters work independently, pitching their ideas to studios and production companies rather than working in an office every day. Some screenwriters become famous and command huge paychecks, while others write for smaller projects or television.

More than just movies. Screenwriters don't just write for Hollywood films, they also create scripts for TV shows, video games, web series, and streaming platforms. Each type of story has different rules about how long scripts should be and what kinds of stories work best.
