Square Dance

Music and calls. A caller shouts out instructions while live music or recorded songs play, telling dancers exactly what moves to do next like 'do-si-do' and 'promenade.'

Eight dancers total. Four couples (eight people) stand facing inward from each side of a square, so each couple can see and dance with the others around them.

Many different styles. Square dancing is part of a huge family of group dances with names like contra dances, barn dances, ceilidh dances, and country dances that all work the same way.

Over 100 formations. While the square is the most famous setup, dancers can arrange themselves in more than 100 different patterns and shapes to create variety and fun.

Partners and neighbors. You dance with your partner, but you also switch around and interact with the other couples, making everyone feel connected and part of the team.
