Lindy Hop

Born in Harlem. The Lindy Hop was created in African-American communities in Harlem, New York City, starting around 1928. It grew from the creativity and musical energy of the neighborhood.

Blended many dances. The Lindy Hop mixed together jazz, tap dancing, the Charleston, and breakaway moves into one spectacular dance. It took the best moves from what came before and created something totally new.

Peak popularity. The Lindy Hop became wildly popular during the swing era of the late 1930s and early 1940s. Dancers couldn't get enough of its fast footwork and exciting spins.

Jazz dance family. The Lindy Hop is considered a jazz dance and belongs to the swing dance family. It moves and flows to the rhythm of jazz music, with lots of energy and improvisation.
