Cattle and sheep. Ranches are mainly known for raising cattle and sheep that graze, or eat grass, across wide open lands. These animals need lots of space to roam and find food.

More than just cows. While cattle are the most famous ranch animals, ranchers also raise horses, elk, bison, ostriches, emus, and alpacas. Each animal needs different care and space.

Mostly in the West. Ranches are most common in the western United States, Mexico, and western Canada where there's plenty of open land. But you can find ranches in other places too.

Ranchers run the show. The people who own or run ranches are called ranchers, cattlemen, or stockgrowers. They take care of animals, manage the land, and decide what to raise.

A special kind of farm. A ranch is really a type of farm, but instead of growing crops, it focuses on raising livestock that eat grass and roam freely.
