Ancient and beloved. Recorders have been around since medieval times and became super popular during the Renaissance period in Europe. They're one of the oldest instruments still played today.

Made from wood. Most recorders are crafted from wood like maple or rosewood, though some are made from plastic. The wood is carefully shaped and hollowed out to create the perfect sound.

Eight holes to play. A recorder has eight holes: one thumb-hole on the back and seven finger-holes on the front. By covering different combinations of holes, you can play all the different notes.

You blow sideways. Unlike a flute that you blow across the top, you blow directly into a recorder's mouthpiece, and it channels the air down inside the instrument to make sound.

Perfect first instrument. Recorders are often the first instrument kids learn in school because they're affordable, durable, and you can make pleasant sounds pretty quickly.
