Master of disguise. The reef stonefish looks almost exactly like a rock or lump of coral on the seafloor, making it nearly invisible to both prey and divers. This incredible camouflage helps it ambush fish and crustaceans that swim too close.

Extremely venomous. This fish has thirteen venomous spines along its back that deliver one of the deadliest venoms of any fish in the ocean. A single sting can cause severe pain and even kill a human if not treated quickly.

Spreads across warm seas. The reef stonefish is found across the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean, living in shallow waters where coral reefs and rocky areas provide perfect hiding spots.

Ambush hunter. This fish doesn't chase its food. Instead, it sits perfectly still on the ocean floor and waits for small fish or shrimp to come within striking distance, then gulps them down in an instant.

Ocean's deadliest fish. The reef stonefish is considered the most venomous fish species in the world, and it earned its family name, Scorpaenidae, because its venomous spines resemble a scorpion's sting.
