Extreme heat resistance. Rhenium has one of the highest melting points of any element, which means it stays solid at temperatures that would melt almost everything else. This makes it perfect for rocket engines and jet turbines that get extremely hot.
Incredibly rare. Rhenium is so scarce that there's only about 1 part per billion in Earth's crust, making it rarer than gold in most rocks. It's so hard to find on its own that we almost always get it as a bonus when mining for other metals like copper and molybdenum.
Chemical shape-shifter. Rhenium can change its oxidation state from negative 3 to positive 7, giving it unusual chemical flexibility. This ability helps scientists use it in different ways depending on what they're trying to make.
Hidden in mining byproducts. You won't find pure rhenium deposits anywhere in the world. Instead, it comes mixed in with copper and molybdenum ores, and miners extract it during their normal refinement process.
Silvery-gray beauty. Rhenium looks like a shiny, silvery-gray metal that's also incredibly heavy for its size. This dense, lustrous appearance is one way scientists identify it in laboratories.
