Homemade rocket races. On the third day of the festival, people compete to see whose handmade rocket flies the highest and farthest into the sky. These aren't space rockets but colorful bamboo tubes packed with gunpowder that families have built together.

Welcoming the rains. The festival happens at the start of the wet season when farmers really need rain for their rice crops. People believe launching rockets into the sky helps ask the heavens for a good harvest with plenty of water.

Music and dancing. The festival isn't just about rockets. There are also beautiful parades with dancers, musicians, and decorated floats moving through the streets, creating a festive atmosphere for the whole community.

Showing community pride. Families and sponsors spend time and money to build the best rockets and organize the biggest celebrations, which helps them earn respect and honor in their village.

Buddhist tradition. The Rocket Festival is a Buddhist folk festival celebrated by Lao people in northeastern Thailand and Laos as a way to bring good fortune and celebrate together as a community.
