Cool Facts
First sub-4-minute mile. On May 6, 1954, Roger Bannister ran a mile in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds at a track in Oxford, England. For decades, people thought this was impossible because they believed the human body just couldn't move that fast.
Doctor and athlete. Bannister wasn't just a runner, he was also a neurologist, which means he studied how the brain and nervous system work. He proved you could be excellent at both sports and serious science.
Breaking the barrier. Before Bannister ran his famous mile, many track coaches and doctors said no human could ever do it. His achievement showed that sometimes impossible limits are just in our minds and waiting to be broken.
British national hero. Bannister's mile run made him famous around the whole world and became one of the greatest moments in sports history. People still talk about his race more than 70 years later.
Inspired others fast. After Bannister broke the 4-minute barrier, other runners quickly ran sub-4-minute miles too. This showed that once someone proves something is possible, others find it easier to believe in themselves.
