Rogue Waves

Sudden giant walls. Rogue waves are enormous waves that appear out of nowhere on the ocean surface. They can reach heights of 100 feet or more and catch sailors completely by surprise.

Danger to ships. These massive waves can be extremely dangerous to large ships and structures like lighthouses that stand in the ocean. A rogue wave hits so unexpectedly that crew members may not have time to prepare or protect themselves.

Sneaker waves at shore. When rogue waves reach the beach, people sometimes call them sneaker waves because they seem to sneak up on unsuspecting swimmers and beachgoers.

Different from tsunamis. Rogue waves are not the same as tsunamis, which are long waves caused by earthquakes or underwater events. Tsunamis can be hard to notice in deep water, but rogue waves are sudden surface swells that appear without warning.

Hard to predict. Scientists still work to understand exactly why and when rogue waves form, which makes them one of the ocean's most mysterious and unpredictable forces.
