Huge City. Bangkok has about 9.1 million people living in it, which makes it by far the biggest city in Thailand. Over 18 million people live in the greater Bangkok area, making it a megacity that is way bigger than any other city in the country.

River Delta Home. Bangkok sits in the Chao Phraya River delta in the middle of Thailand, where a major river spreads out as it reaches the sea. The city covers about 1,569 square kilometers of land.

Long Thai Name. Bangkok has an official Thai name so long it has 20 parts: Krung Thep Maha Nakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit. Most Thai people just call it Krung Thep (which means City of Angels).

Nation's Engine. Bangkok is so important to Thailand's economy that it dwarfs all other cities in the country. The city is the heart of business, government, and culture for the whole nation.
