Citizens had power. In the Roman Republic, people (especially men who owned land) could vote and participate in government decisions. This was radical for the time, as most of the world was ruled by kings with total control.
Three branches of government. Romans created a system with consuls (leaders), a Senate (advisors), and assemblies where citizens voted. This balance of power meant no single person could become a tyrant.
Incredible military expansion. Starting from just a city, Rome used its powerful legions to conquer all the lands around the Mediterranean Sea, including North Africa, Egypt, Greece, and most of Europe.
Laws written down. Romans believed laws should be clear and written for everyone to see. They created a legal code that influenced how courts and laws work in countries all around the world today.
Republic lasted 500 years. The Roman Republic ruled from about 509 BC until 27 BC, when it finally transformed into an empire. That's half a millennium of one of history's most influential governments.
