Invented by ErnΕ Rubik. In 1974, a Hungarian sculptor and architecture professor named ErnΕ Rubik created the Magic Cube as a puzzle challenge. He wanted to make a toy that would help people understand how three-dimensional objects work.
Global sensation. The Rubik's Cube was released worldwide in 1980 and quickly became one of the most recognizable toys on the planet. Around 500 million cubes have been sold since then, making it the bestselling puzzle game ever.
Award winning. The cube won the German Game of the Year special award for Best Puzzle in 1980 and was inducted into the US National Toy Hall of Fame in 2014. These honors show how much people around the world love this puzzle.
Originally called Magic Cube. Before it became the Rubik's Cube, the puzzle was sold under the name Magic Cube in the UK starting in 1978. It didn't get its famous name until it was licensed for worldwide distribution.
