People on ships. Sailors are crew members who work aboard all kinds of watercraft, from massive cargo ships to tiny fishing boats. They keep the vessel running smoothly and safely at sea.

Many different roles. Some sailors navigate ships, others repair engines, manage sails, or handle cargo. Each job is important for keeping the ship operating properly.

Military and civilian. Sailors work for navies in their countries' militaries, or they can work for private companies, fishing operations, or even as sports competitors in sailing races.

Fishers count too. People who catch fish professionally are considered sailors, since they also work on boats and depend on their knowledge of the sea to do their jobs.

Old word, new meaning. The word sailor comes from the days of sailing ships, but today it describes anyone who works on any kind of boat or ship, whether powered by wind, fuel, or electricity.
