Super old city. Samarkand has been continuously inhabited for thousands of years, making it one of the oldest living cities in Central Asia. People have been calling it home for longer than most other cities in the world.

Located in Uzbekistan. Samarkand sits in southeastern Uzbekistan, a country in Central Asia. It's the third-largest city in the entire country with over 551,700 residents.

Regional capital. Samarkand serves as the capital of the Samarkand Region, meaning it's the most important city in its area. It also includes several smaller settlements nearby like Kimyogarlar, Farhod, and Khishrav.

Crossroads of history. For centuries, Samarkand was a major stop on the Silk Road trade routes connecting East and West. This made it an incredibly important place where people, ideas, and goods from across the world would meet.
