Regional capital. Samarkand serves as the capital of the Samarkand Region, meaning it's the most important city in its area. It also includes several smaller settlements nearby like Kimyogarlar, Farhod, and Khishrav.
Crossroads of history. For centuries, Samarkand was a major stop on the Silk Road trade routes connecting East and West. This made it an incredibly important place where people, ideas, and goods from across the world would meet.
