Keeping Score Public. A scoreboard lets every single person in a stadium or gym see the same score at the same time, so nobody gets confused about who is winning.

Old School Method. Long ago, scoreboards used hanging number cards and a mechanical clock. A person had to physically change each card whenever someone scored a point.

Modern Light Displays. Today's scoreboards use special light bulbs or LEDs arranged in patterns called dot-matrix or seven-segment displays that light up to show numbers and words.

Someone Runs It. An official operator uses a control panel to update the scoreboard during the game, making sure all the information displayed is correct and current.

More Than Just Score. Modern scoreboards show not just the score but also the time remaining, player statistics, and sometimes replays or team information to keep fans engaged.
