Art in all directions. Sculpture is different from paintings because you can see it from the front, back, sides, and all around. It has height, width, and depth, just like real objects in the world.

Carving and building. Artists create sculptures by removing material (like carving stone or wood) or by adding and joining pieces together (like welding metal or stacking clay).

Many materials work. Sculptors have used stone, metal, wood, and clay for thousands of years, but today artists can use almost anything they can imagine, from plastic to found objects.

Very old art form. Sculpture is one of the oldest types of visual art, going back to ancient civilizations that carved statues and figures long before painting became popular.

Part of visual arts. Sculpture belongs to a group of art forms called the plastic arts, which means art forms where you physically shape materials into new forms.
