Tiny living package. A seed holds a baby plant called an embryo, plus stored food to help it grow when conditions are right. It's like a lunch box for a plant baby.

Protected by a coat. Seeds have a tough outer layer called a testa that shields the delicate embryo and nutrients inside from damage and drying out.

Born from flowers. Seeds form when pollen reaches a flower's ovule, creating a zygote that grows into a seed. Each seed is a completely new plant waiting to sprout.
