Spring's Birthday. Setsubun happens on February 3rd, the day before spring officially begins in Japan's traditional calendar. The name means 'seasonal division' because it marks where one season ends and another starts.

Bean Throwing Magic. During Setsubun, people throw roasted beans inside their homes and temples to chase away evil spirits and bad luck from the past year. It's believed this clears the way for good fortune in the new season.

Chasing Away Demons. Families sometimes wear masks of scary demons or have someone dress as an oni (a demon) so they can throw beans at them and chase the bad spirits away. Kids love this playful way of getting rid of negativity.

Spring Festival Celebration. Setsubun is part of Japan's bigger Spring Festival, where people also celebrate Risshun, the first day of spring on the old calendar. Both days are filled with traditions meant to bring fresh starts and good energy.
