Cool Facts
Ancient invention. Shawarma started in the Levant (the area around modern day Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, and Israel) during the Ottoman Empire, making it hundreds of years old.
Spinning cone. The meat is cut into thin slices, stacked into a cone shape, and placed on a vertical spit that slowly rotates over heat so it cooks evenly on all sides.
Fresh shaving. As the outside of the meat cone gets cooked and golden, it is shaved off with a sharp knife and served right away, keeping the inside warm and juicy.
Many meat choices. While traditionally made with lamb or mutton, shawarma can also be made with chicken, turkey, beef, veal, or even falafel for a vegetarian version.
Popular everywhere. Shawarma started as street food in the Middle East but is now loved and eaten by people all around the world.
