Super Fast Speeds. The Shinkansen trains travel at speeds up to 320 kilometers per hour (about 200 miles per hour), making them some of the fastest trains in the world. Passengers can cross Japan's biggest islands in just a few hours instead of a full day.

Started in Tokyo. The Shinkansen system was first built to connect Tokyo with other major cities around Japan. It launched in 1964 and became one of the world's first high-speed train networks.

Always On Time. The Shinkansen is famous for being incredibly punctual, with average delays of less than one minute. Japanese engineers designed the trains and tracks so carefully that they almost never run late.
