Cool Facts
Lever power. A lever is a bar that pivots on a point called a fulcrum, letting you lift heavy things with less effort. The longer the lever, the easier it is to move something heavy.
Wheel's magic. A wheel and axle spin together, making it much easier to move things or turn things. Doorknobs, wheels on bikes, and steering wheels all use this simple machine.
Pulley helps lift. A pulley is a wheel with a rope around it that helps you lift heavy objects straight up. By using multiple pulleys together, you can lift really heavy things with less strength.
Ramps make sense. An inclined plane is just a slanted surface that makes it easier to move something up high. Instead of lifting something straight up, you can roll or slide it up a ramp with less effort.
Wedge splits things. A wedge is a simple machine shaped like a triangle that pushes things apart. Axes, chisels, and even door stoppers are wedges that use a little force to do big work.
Screw twists tight. A screw is like an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder, and it can hold things together or lift them. Turning a screw might be slower than pushing, but it holds much tighter.
