Voices of magic. Sirens used their beautiful, alluring voices to enchant sailors and draw them toward danger. The most famous story about them comes from Homer's Odyssey, where the hero Odysseus had to protect his crew from the sirens' irresistible song.

Island homes. Ancient writers placed sirens on rocky islands surrounded by cliffs and dangerous waters. Some said they lived on islands called Sirenum Scopuli, while others put them near places in Italy like Paestum or the islands called the Sirenuse.

Two different looks. Different stories described sirens in different ways. Some versions showed them as women with bird wings and bodies, while other versions imagined them as mermaids with fish tails instead of human legs.

Dangerous beauty. Sailors who heard sirens' enchanting songs were drawn toward the rocky islands and couldn't resist sailing toward them, which would wreck their ships. The sirens' magic made it almost impossible for sailors to stay away.
