Ancient messaging system. Smoke signals were one of the very first ways people could share important information across miles and miles without needing to travel themselves. Messengers would light fires and use blankets or branches to create puffs of smoke in patterns that other people watching from hilltops or high ground could read like a code.

Sent three types of messages. Smoke signals were used to share news between villages, warn communities about danger like enemy attacks or wild animals, and call people together for important gatherings or ceremonies. Different smoke patterns meant different things, kind of like using words instead of sounds.

Used by many cultures. Native Americans, ancient Chinese armies, and Mediterranean civilizations all developed their own smoke signal systems to stay connected across their lands. This shows that people everywhere realized sending messages fast over long distances was really important.

Required clear weather. Smoke signals only worked when the air was clear and someone could actually see the smoke from far away. On foggy or rainy days, this communication method just wouldn't work, so people had to plan ahead.

Best sent from high places. Messengers would light their fires on hilltops, mountains, or tall structures so the smoke would rise high and be visible from the greatest distance possible. This made geography really important for ancient communication networks.
