Brilliant German inventor. Ferdinand von Zeppelin dreamed up the idea for rigid airships starting in 1874 and patented his design in 1895 and 1899. His invention was so clever that the word zeppelin eventually became the name for all rigid airships.

First flying passengers. Zeppelins made history as the world's first airline when DELAG started flying paying passengers in 1910. By 1914, these giant aircraft had safely carried over 10,000 passengers on more than 1,500 flights.

Rigid metal frame. Unlike balloons that are just big bags of gas, Zeppelins had a strong metal frame inside that kept their shape, which is what made them different and much more useful for carrying people and cargo.

Wartime use. During World War I, the German military used Zeppelins to bomb enemy targets and scout for enemy ships. These powerful airships showed how flying machines could change warfare, though they were eventually replaced by faster airplanes.
