Massive African Power. The Songhai Empire was one of the largest empires in all of African history, stretching across the western Sahel region during the 15th and 16th centuries. It was so huge and important that people still study it today to understand Africa's past.
Cities of Trade. Three major cities made the empire wealthy and famous: Gao was the capital, while Timbuktu and Djennรฉ became booming trade hubs where merchants from across Africa and beyond came to buy and sell goods. These cities grew so rich and cultured that they became legendary.
Two Great Dynasties. First, a ruler named Sonni Ali established Gao as the empire's capital and built up Songhai power. Later, the Askia dynasty took over and ruled for nearly 100 years, from 1493 to 1591, continuing to make the empire strong and successful.
Ancient Roots. Even though the Songhai Empire became huge in the 1400s, the Songhai people had lived in and around Gao since at least the 11th century. This means they had been building their civilization for hundreds of years before their empire reached its peak.
