Massive bird. The southern ground hornbill is the largest hornbill in the entire world, making it a truly impressive bird to spot in African woodlands and savannas.
Deep, booming call. These birds are famous for their incredibly loud, low-pitched calls that echo across the African landscape and can be heard from far away.
African home. You can find southern ground hornbills only in Africa, ranging from Kenya all the way down to South Africa, where they walk along the ground searching for food.
Curved beak. Their most striking feature is a huge, thick curved beak that looks powerful enough to handle almost anything they might want to eat.
One of two species. There's only one other ground hornbill species in the world, the Abyssinian ground hornbill, which also lives in Africa.
