Sputnik started it all. On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, a metal ball with antennas that orbited Earth and beeped. This shocked the world and kicked off the Space Age.
Humans reached space. In 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first person in space, orbiting Earth in a tiny capsule. A few years later, astronauts from the United States landed on the Moon in 1969.
A race to the stars. The United States and Soviet Union competed fiercely to achieve space milestones faster and further. This Space Race pushed both countries to invent amazing new technology.
Former enemies joined hands. The Space Race ended in 1975 when American and Soviet spacecraft docked together in orbit, with astronauts and cosmonauts meeting and shaking hands in space.
Culture changed forever. The Space Age inspired people everywhere. New movies, toys, music, and fashion all celebrated space exploration, and kids dreamed about becoming astronauts.
