Coin of eight. The Spanish dollar was originally called the piece of eight because it was worth exactly eight smaller Spanish coins called reales. This made it super convenient for big purchases and trading.
World's first global currency. Spanish dollars were used for trade everywhere from Europe to Asia to the Americas. Merchants loved them because they were always the same size and quality no matter where they came from.
Heavy and silver. Each Spanish dollar contained about 25 grams of pure silver and was roughly the size of a modern quarter. Its weight and purity made it trustworthy, so people accepted it without worry.
Countries made their own marks. Some countries stamped their own symbols onto Spanish dollars so people would accept them as local money. This saved them from having to make their own coins.
