Caves form slowly. Caves are created over thousands of years when water dissolves soft rock like limestone, carving out hollow spaces underground. The water keeps working away at the rock bit by bit until huge chambers appear.

Scientists explore caves. Speleologists are scientists who study caves by actually going into them, measuring their passages, and collecting rocks and samples. They use the same climbing and caving skills that adventure explorers use.

Caves have their own ecosystems. Many caves have unique plants and animals that live nowhere else on Earth, from blind fish to special insects that have adapted to life in total darkness.

Caves come in different types. Some caves are made of limestone, others form in lava flows, and some are carved by glaciers or sea waves. Each type has its own special features and formations.

Water shapes everything. Underground rivers and streams continue to flow through caves, creating waterfalls, pools, and new passages. Water is the main force that changes caves over time.
