Shield carriers. A squire's main job was to carry and protect a knight's heavy shield and armor during battles and tournaments. This was super important because a knight couldn't fight well without their equipment ready.

Takes care of everything. Squires did lots of practical tasks like saddling horses, cleaning weapons, polishing armor, and making sure the knight had everything needed for combat. These jobs might sound simple, but they were crucial to keeping a knight battle-ready.

Learning by doing. Squires weren't just errand boys, they were apprentices training to become knights themselves. They watched experienced knights, practiced sword fighting, learned about honor and bravery, and gradually prepared for their own knighthood.

Starts young. Most boys became squires around age 14 after serving as pages (younger attendants) in a noble's household. After several years of hard work and training, they could be officially made knights at ceremonies called dubbing.

Path to power. Becoming a squire was often a poor boy's best chance to climb up in medieval society and gain respect and land. It meant learning valuable skills and connections that could transform your entire life.
