Colossus of Rhodes

Built in 280 BC. The Colossus of Rhodes was created by a Greek artist named Chares of Lindos to honor the city of Rhodes after they successfully defended themselves against an attack by a powerful army led by Demetrius I of Macedon.

Statue of Helios. The Colossus showed the Greek sun god Helios, who the ancient Greeks believed drove the sun across the sky each day. It was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the most famous and impressive buildings and statues known to the ancient people.

Bronze giant. This enormous statue was made of bronze, a metal created by mixing copper and tin. It took years to build and required incredible skill and engineering to stand as tall as a modern office building.

Island location. The Colossus stood in the city of Rhodes on the Greek island of Rhodes in the Mediterranean Sea. It was a landmark that people sailing to Rhodes would see from the water as they approached the island.
