Steer Roping

Cowboy versus steer. One cowboy rides a fast horse after a running steer, trying to throw a rope around its horns or body to stop it. The clock starts when the steer leaves the chute and stops when the steer is down and tied.

Speed is everything. The best steer ropers complete the whole event in just a few seconds. A really fast roper might catch and tie a steer in around 8 to 10 seconds.

The horse matters too. The cowboy's horse has to be quick, smart, and brave to chase down a scared steer without getting hurt. These horses are specially trained for steer roping work.

Skill and practice. Ropers have to throw their rope perfectly while riding at full speed, then jump off the horse to tie the steer's legs together. It takes years of practice to get this right.

Rodeo tradition. Steer roping is one of the classic rodeo events and has been part of western rodeos for more than a hundred years.
