Shield-shaped body. Stink bugs have a flat, wide body shaped like a shield, which is why they are sometimes called shield bugs. This special shape helps protect their bodies from predators.

Smelly defense trick. When a stink bug feels threatened or scared, it releases a stinky liquid from special glands under its body. This awful smell confuses predators and gives the bug time to escape.

Found worldwide. Different types of stink bugs live all over the world. The brown marmorated stink bug came to North America from Asia and is now found in many countries.

True bugs, not beetles. Stink bugs belong to a group of insects called true bugs, which have special straw-like mouths that they use to poke into plants and drink the juice inside. Most beetles have chewing mouths instead.

Plant eaters. Many stink bugs eat the juice from fruits, vegetables, and crops like soybeans and corn, which can damage farms. This makes them a challenge for farmers around the world.
