Cool Facts
Winter coat magic. In winter, stoats change from brown to pure white fur (called ermine), which helps them hide in snow while hunting. This amazing color change happens in cold climates but not everywhere they live.
Royal fur treasure. For over 500 years, ermine fur has been used on the fancy robes of kings, queens, and nobles in Europe. You can still see white ermine on the ceremonial robes of British House of Lords members today.
Speedy hunter. Stoats are small but fearless hunters with long, lean bodies that let them chase rabbits and mice into tight burrows. They're much fiercer than they look for their size.
Found almost everywhere. Stoats live across northern Europe, Asia, and parts of North America in forests, grasslands, and even mountains. Their wide range makes them one of the most successful weasels on Earth.
