Striped Hyena

Lone hunter. Unlike spotted hyenas that live in big groups, striped hyenas are mostly solitary animals that hunt and scavenge alone at night.

Wide range. Striped hyenas live across a huge territory spanning North Africa, East Africa, the Middle East, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and India, making them one of the most widespread hyena species.

Seriously struggling. There are fewer than 10,000 striped hyenas left in the wild, and their numbers keep dropping because people hunt them and their food sources are disappearing.

Powerful teeth. These hyenas have incredibly strong jaws that can crunch through bones and tough animal parts that other predators can't eat.

Night wanderers. Striped hyenas only come out after dark to search for food, hiding away during the day to stay safe from threats.
