Active volcano island. Stromboli is an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea near Sicily that has Mount Stromboli on it, one of Italy's four active volcanoes. The volcano has been erupting almost constantly for more than 2,000 years, making it one of the most reliable erupting volcanoes on Earth.

Part of the Aeolian Islands. Stromboli is one of seven volcanic islands called the Aeolian Islands, which form a chain north of Sicily. These islands were all created by volcanic activity and sit along a volcanic arc in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Volcanic arc island. The Aeolian Islands exist because of Earth's tectonic plates pushing together and creating a line of volcanoes. This type of formation is called a volcanic arc, and it's where some of the world's most active volcanoes happen.

Mythological home. In ancient Greek mythology, Stromboli was said to be the home of Aeolus, the god of the winds. The entire island group is named after him, connecting science and ancient stories.

Inhabited volcanic home. People actually live on Stromboli despite the volcano erupting regularly, making it a unique place where humans share the island with an active natural wonder.
