Sturgeon

Dinosaur-era survivors. Sturgeon have been swimming in Earth's rivers and oceans for over 174 million years, making them older than most dinosaurs. They've barely changed since prehistoric times, which makes them living fossils.

Covered in armor. Instead of regular scales, sturgeon have five rows of bony plates called scutes running along their sides, making them look like they're wearing medieval armor. Their skin is smooth and scaleless underneath.

Super long lifespans. Sturgeon grow very slowly and can live for over 100 years, making them some of the longest-living fish in the world. They also grow very slowly before they're ready to have babies.

Spread across two continents. Sturgeon live in rivers, lakes, and coastlines in North America and Eurasia, mostly in cooler subtropical, temperate, and sub-Arctic waters. They're found on both sides of the world.

Shark-like tail. Sturgeon have a crooked tail fin similar to a shark's, which is unusual compared to most other fish. This special tail shape helps them swim powerfully through water.
