Shortcut for ships. The Suez Canal lets boats travel directly from Europe to Asia without going all the way around Africa. This saves ships weeks of travel time and millions of dollars in fuel costs.

Divides two continents. The canal cuts right through the Isthmus of Suez, making it the official border between Africa and Asia. It's one of the most important geographical lines in the world.

Hand-dug waterway. The canal is 193 kilometers long (about 120 miles) and was built entirely by people with shovels and machines over many decades starting in the 1850s. It's one of the greatest engineering achievements in history.

Mega trade highway. About 12% of all the world's trade travels through the Suez Canal, making it incredibly valuable for global commerce. Ships carrying everything from oil to computers pass through it every day.

Sea-level design. Unlike some canals that use locks and gates, the Suez Canal is at sea level, so water doesn't need to be pumped up and down. This makes it easier and faster for huge cargo ships to pass through.
