Founder of Mali. Sundiata Keita created the Mali Empire in West Africa during the 1200s. He transformed a small kingdom into one of the most powerful empires in the medieval world.

Conquered vast lands. He defeated the powerful Sosso Kingdom and brought many neighboring territories under Mali's control. This made Mali stretch across a huge portion of West Africa.

Built great wealth. Under Sundiata's rule, Mali became incredibly rich through gold trade and farming. Gold from Mali's mines attracted merchants from across Africa, Europe, and Asia.

Great-uncle of Mansa Musa. Sundiata's great-nephew Mansa Musa became one of the most famous and richest rulers in world history. The wealth and power Sundiata created made this possible.

Legend and history. Stories about Sundiata became famous across West Africa, told and retold by griots (traditional storytellers) for hundreds of years.
