Superb Fairywren

Brilliant blue males. Male superb fairywrens in breeding season wear striking bright blue on their foreheads, ear coverts, mantle, and tail, plus a black mask and throat that makes them look like tiny superheroes. Non-breeding males lose these fancy colors and turn grey-brown like the females.

Stay put and territorial. These birds are sedentary, meaning they don't migrate but stay in one place their whole lives. They're also very territorial, defending their home areas from other fairywrens.

Found in southeast Australia. Superb fairywrens are common and familiar birds across south-eastern Australia, from mainland areas to Tasmania, Flinders Island, and King Island. They've adapted to live in different regions with slightly different looks.

Tricky to spot females. Early bird watchers thought male fairywrens were polygamous because all the dull-colored birds looked like females at first glance. It took time to realize the dull grey-brown birds were actually non-breeding males, females, and juveniles.

Six different groups. Scientists recognize six subspecies groups of superb fairywrens, with three larger and darker forms from Tasmania and islands, and three smaller and paler forms from mainland Australia and Kangaroo Island.
