Snow Petrel

Whitest bird alive. Snow petrels are completely white from head to tail, which helps them blend into the snowy Antarctic landscape and stay hidden from predators.

Southernmost home. These birds breed inland in Antarctica, farther south than any other bird species, living in one of the harshest places on the planet.

Alone in its genus. The snow petrel is the only bird in its entire genus, called Pagodroma, making it unique among all the birds in the world.

South Pole visitor. Snow petrels are one of only three bird species ever spotted at the Geographic South Pole, along with Antarctic petrels and south polar skuas.

Graceful flyer. Despite being small and delicate-looking, snow petrels are excellent fliers that can soar over frozen landscapes searching for food like fish and squid.
