Cool Facts
Ancient Hawaiian boards. Surfboards were invented in ancient Hawaii and were made from local wood like koa. These early boards were often over 15 feet long and incredibly heavy, nothing like the easy-to-carry boards surfers use today.
Catching waves. A surfboard is designed to be light enough to carry but strong enough to support a person standing on it while it glides across an ocean wave. This balance between weight and strength is what makes surfing possible.
Fins for control. One of the biggest improvements to surfboards was adding one or more fins to the bottom rear of the board. These fins help surfers steer and control the board smoothly as they ride the waves.
Modern materials. Over time, surfboards have been made from many different materials beyond wood, and their shapes have been refined to help surfers perform better. Each change makes surfboards faster, lighter, and easier to maneuver.
