Cool Facts
Ground fighting focus. Unlike many martial arts that use kicks and punches, Brazilian jiu-jitsu is all about taking your opponent down to the mat and controlling them there. Once you're on the ground, you use special techniques to win.
Winning by submission. In Brazilian jiu-jitsu, you can win a match by making your opponent give up, called a submission. This usually happens when someone is caught in a joint lock (where your arm or leg gets twisted) or a chokehold, and they tap their hand to signal they quit.
Technique over size. One of the coolest things about Brazilian jiu-jitsu is that a smaller person can beat a bigger person if they know the right techniques and positions. It's all about being smart and using leverage, not just being strong.
Self-defense system. Brazilian jiu-jitsu started as a way to defend yourself in real situations. Even though it's now a popular sport with competitions, it still teaches practical self-defense moves you could use if you ever needed to protect yourself.
