Meditation in motion. Tai chi is performed in slow, flowing sequences called forms that look like beautiful, graceful dances. Practitioners say it feels like meditation because the gentle movements calm your mind and body at the same time.
Started as combat. Tai chi was originally created in China as a martial art for fighting and self-defense. Over time, people realized the same movements that taught fighting skills also made excellent exercise and helped reduce stress.
Sport with rules. Today, tai chi is competed as a sport where judges watch performers do forms, practice pushing hands with partners, and spar. Competitors are judged on how smooth, balanced, and skilled their movements are.
