Many different families. Chinese martial arts are organized into different families or styles, each with their own special moves and training methods. Some famous ones are named after animals, like the Five Animals style that copies how tigers, cranes, snakes, leopards, and dragons fight.
Internal versus external. Some martial arts focus on internal power, using something called qi (life energy) to make you stronger and faster. Others focus on external power, building your muscles and heart through tough physical training.
Northern and southern styles. Chinese martial arts are often divided by where they come from in China. Northern styles tend to focus on high kicks and big, sweeping movements, while southern styles often use lower stances and powerful hand techniques.
Ancient wisdom guides training. Many Chinese martial arts were inspired by old philosophies, religions, and legends from China's long history. This means the fighting styles teach not just how to fight, but also how to think and live with balance and respect.
Centuries of development. Chinese martial arts didn't just appear overnight. They developed and changed over many, many centuries as master fighters passed their knowledge down to students and new ideas were added over time.
