Three barrel triangle. In barrel racing, three barrels are set up in a triangle pattern inside a large arena. The rider and horse have to gallop around each barrel as fast as possible without knocking them over, because hitting a barrel adds seconds to your time.

Speed wins the race. The goal is to complete the barrel pattern in the fastest time possible. Even a difference of just a few hundredths of a second can mean the difference between winning and losing at professional competitions.

Mostly women compete. Barrel racing is usually a women's event in college and professional rodeos, though both boys and girls can compete at youth and amateur levels. It's one of the most popular rodeo events for female athletes.

Horse and rider teamwork. Success in barrel racing depends on both the horse's athletic ability and the rider's horsemanship skills. The rider must guide the horse through tight turns while keeping it safe and balanced at high speeds.
